Fenside Local History
Fenside Local History emerged from an oral history group that began in Newpark Close Family Resource Centre in 2012 with the intention of encouraging older members of the community to share their memories. The success of this venture can be judged by the large amount of recorded material available to the public in the County Library.
With the completion of this programme, it was decided to form Fenside Local History, which would continue to engage mature people in local history.
This year (2014), we have had guided tours of Rothe House, Kilkenny Castle and Altamont Gardens. Allied to this, we had an informative lecture by Mr. Donie Butler on the history and relevance of the Mc Donagh Junction site, From the Famine to the Present Day.
Realizing that our objective of preserving and recording local history would benefit from an induction of younger blood, we formed and inter-generational alliance with members of the Newpark Close F.R.C. Afterschool Project .
This group, Ógaoise, produced two booklets, Seanfhocail Mo Sheanmháthar (2014), and Other Things My Granny Said (2014). The proverbs were supplied by older members and these were embellished with original paintings courtesy of the Afterschool Project
